I also began watching birds at age 8 or s in 1975 and very seldom used binoculars (though not essential, I wished I had more though....). I have gotten up to 298 on my all time Oz bird tally and used them rarely, but have not really done much birdwatching since high school. When my kids are a bit older and I am getting to some more remote places, like Maroubra beach :) - I will get a pair soon (ish). The maroubra birdwaching has inspired me to take up thi again at some stage.....
