Hi Peter,
             Maybe a little advanced for novices, but the best way to ID unknown birds is to immediately draw a little diagram with markings, bill shape, colour distribution, tail length and so on. You soon get the hang of it and it concentrates the eye on relevant features once this is compared to field guide pics.
