Yesterday I was walking home from school with my 5 year old daughter.
She knows the common birds, but spotted a House Sparrow and couldn't
recognise it, and I couldn't remember ever identifying one for her.
My recollection is that 15 years ago they were the most conspicuous
species where we live in inner Sydney (Glebe). Not that I'm lamenting
their decline.

Also yesterday a Sacred Kingfisher at our local oval presumably
passing through on its way north.
