Further on the above subject, due to financial constraints I bought the C740
with 3.2 megapixels as against the C750 with 4 megapixels. This does not
matter for general use, however with birds it is often necessary to crop
pictures drastically and then pixellation does become evident.

2. I have also got the Olympus TCON-17 teleconverter lens, for around $200
extra this extends the 10*zoom to 17* and is excellent for birding. This
virtually precludes use of the camera as hand-held except at very high
shutter speeds. However I have managed adequately with a monopod in its
retracted mode at about 90degrees to the camera and tucked into my armpit.
This gives the mobility of a handheld camera with enough stability to steady
the teleconverter.

3. Remember to set the focus mode to 'Spot' for birding, this is just one of
about 50 menu settings, and I missed it at first, got some lovely pictures
of branches/leaves with a blur where the bird was at...
