Is the Fan-tailed Cuckoo a bird of spring in the east? In the west we start to hear them in winter (June and sometimes as early as May) in suitable habitat, so I think of them more as a bird of winter in SW WA, although they continue to call through to about October. I have always wondered where they go in the summer and early autumn. You can often find one on the far south coast in this period, but in July to September they are fairly common through the south west.

I think your observations for the SW are reasonably applicable in the SE as well. I heard a Fan-tailed Cuckoo the other day near here, and I seem to think of August as being the month they start to get particularly vocal again - though the odd one calls at any point during winter. I'm sure quite a few overwinter - but remain rather elusive. Pallid Cuckoos will be coming back soon though - a sign of late winter rather than spring!
