Yesterday, Sunday 27/7/2003, I was able to observe a Fan-tailed cuckoo,
calling persistently from a wattle tree adjacent to the Maribyrnong River
about 1 km south of the Canning St Bridge in Maribyrnong (Melbourne). I
had heard it the previous weekend but couldn't locate it. This is the
first cuckoo I've recorded in this section of the river since I began
regular visits in January this year. Perhaps a sign spring is on the way ??
Is the Fan-tailed Cuckoo a bird of spring in the east? In the west we
start to hear them in winter (June and sometimes as early as May) in
suitable habitat, so I think of them more as a bird of winter in SW WA,
although they continue to call through to about October. I have always
wondered where they go in the summer and early autumn. You can often find
one on the far south coast in this period, but in July to September they
are fairly common through the south west.
