I seem to remember we had a similar discussion a few years ago on Birding-aus and one suggestion was that in the hundred and thirty or so years since Blackbirds were introduced to Australia British Blackbirds have got a lot tamer and more conspicuous (fewer people eating blackbird pie). Therefore the birds introduced to Australia may reflect the shy and skulking habits of their ancestors better than their present-day cousins in the UK. A similar but slightly different argument might be that the small population which made up the ancestors of Australian Blackbirds was not representative of the general population in Britain at the time, and included many poor singers, therefore the average quality of song has declined in Australia. &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& John Leonard (Dr) http://www.webone.com.au/~jleonard PO Box 243, Woden, ACT 2606, Australia &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&Hot chart ringtones and polyphonics.
