It sounds as if the bird you recorded Vicki was singing a lot better than any I have heard in Australia.Their general behaviour here does seem a little bit more furtive though as with the singing I have no statistical or scientific data to prove my point.
Blackbirds seem to vary from quite common to quite scarce out here so that doesn't seem to be a factor.How much birds learn their song from experience and how much is genetic I don't know but if it's mostly the former then perhaps their song has been lost a little when this species was first introduced.The Song thrush would generally be considered to be an even more accomplished songster but I have not heard them over here.
