One out of thirty is quite remarkable when you consider the vast range of options available. 
 
"Why is it the birds of the UK have managed to arouse the interest of so many, yet those of Australia, far surpassed in diversity & beauty & the splendour of the environment they occupy seem to have failed?"
 
I think you will find it is because of several things.  Firstly the weather allows a greater variety of pursuits to be undertaken in Oz.  Then there are the distances involved in Oz. 
 
I could mention many other reasons for the drop off of young birders  but surely the primary reason is hormones.  What young Aussie wants to spend their time travelling around looking at birds while the opposite sex are waiting?
 
Something about "a bird in the hand ..." or some such.
