Following yesterday's posting, I thought it perhaps worth adding a couple of
clarifying points for those not familiar with the Pacific Harbour matter.
1.
The site was not a historical wader roost, although it is possible that some
waders roosted in the mangrove forest which covered the site prior to
clearing in the mid-80s.
2.
Waders came to use the site after it was cleared and dredge spoil from the
creek raised the ground levels. Later a pipe allowed water on the site at
higher tides, and waders loved this. Additionally, because it was private
land, the birds were less disturbed.
3.
Caboolture Council gave permission long ago for the development, and the
owners had the right to destroy the roost at any time.
4.
The EPBC (Biodiversity Act) came into force just prior to the critical
stage, and muddied the waters, so that the developers were not sure where
they stood with the roost.
Cheers,
Jill
