Hi all

The BP Conservation Awards closing date (31st October) is rapidly
approaching and I've been asked to circulate some information about the
Programme to interested news groups in case anyone out there is thinking of
applying.

The Awards are for student expeditions to carry out conservation research
etc.

So, if you are thinking of mounting a student expedition to look for some
long-lost bird, here's a potential source of funding.

The BP Conservation Programme is a joint initiative between BirdLife, Fauna
and Flora International and BP.

More details below, both the website to look at and the email address to
reply to - not me!

The BP Conservation Programme's mission is to engage, encourage and train
the conservationists of the future through the facilitation of sustainable
projects that address global priorities at a local level. This initiative,
organised by BirdLife International, BP p.l.c. and Fauna & Flora
International (FFI), has been helping young conservationists across the
world to achieve their goals for the past 12 years. Over the last 12 years
the Programme has supported 194 projects in 60 countries. The Programme
currently works towards its aims through advice, training and financial
awards primarily targeting university students.

Financial Awards: In 2003 the Programme will be granting 20 first year
awards and six follow-up awards. The amount of the awards has increased to
between US$7,500 to US$17,500 for first time awards and up to US$35,000 for
follow-up awards. Project teams applying for funding need to submit an
application by the 31 October 2002. All projects applying for awards must
fulfill the following criteria:
· Address a conservation priority of global importance
· Have a strong association with the country where the project will take
place (local people participating in all stages of the project, association
with a university, NGO and/or relevant government department)
· The majority of the team must be university students (under or
post-graduates in full or part- time study)

Full details of criteria and submission procedure can be found on our web
site http://conservation.bp.com Closing date for applications is the 31st
October.

Training: To increase the support given to conservation project planners the
Programme has developed a series of training workshops. A representative
from each award winning team is given the chance to attended training
workshops on field-work techniques and project planning. For the first time
in 2003, these workshops will take place in the US in June 2003.

Advisory Service: Our website provides all details about the Programme and
award application process (including on-line application form) plus
essential information for project planners including; proposal and report
writing guidelines, and links to essential web-based information resources.

We would urge you to consider whether you have any ideas for projects which
