Hi Paul
The TS seems to fluctuate a bit in numbers. I was born & raised in Geelong,
and lived there again in the early 1990s. I grew up in Geelong West, and
lived in Newtown more recently. In those 2 suburbs and Geelong East, Tree
Sparrows have always existed in little enclaves all over the place. In my
parents street in Geelong West, they outnumber House Sparrows in just one
section. (I took Edwin Vella to this spot earlier in the year, where he
sheepishly ticked TS as a lifer) At all the places I've lived in Melbourne
(Armadale, Northcote, Fitzroy North, Pascoe Vale South, Ascot Vale), TS has
been present. At Pascoe Vale they far outnumbered House Sparrows.
The picture seems complicated, and probably shifts around between the two
species. TS are pretty common in Melbourne these days - I hear them most
places I go.
