Hello Denise and other Finch Watchers.
Lerp feeding is another behaviour that I have observed from white-bellied
Crimson Finches (as well as collecting the little "shells" in crop
samples). The lerp was very obvious and easy to see on the leaves though.
Denise, what time of day did you make these observations. Crimson Finches
often drink from dew that forms on leaves early in the morning. Note-
despite some references to the contrary they also drink from waterholes
etc. If you couldn't see any lerp on the leaves that the Gouldians appeared
to be feeding from could they have been drinking? Either way it would be a
very interesting observation.
Cheers,

Michael, interesting what you had to say about finches and their diet.
Let me know when your paper is published.
While doing biological survey work with Brett Lane at Mt Todd in 1990 (I
think it was) we noticed Gouldian Finches above us, apparently gleaning,
we thought for lerps although we couldn't see any on the leaves we
retrieved. I've seen them doing this since but again haven't found
anything on the leaves.
