Highlights from twice-weekly Canberra Ornithologists' Group (COG) hotline,
for week ending 22 August (some reports are of earlier obs).
The returns continue. As ever, El Nino has the last say; following our
record-breaking drought that I reported earlier in the year, we have now
had, officially, our wettest winter ever!! (Without the dreadful problems
that others have had, however).
PALLID CUCKOO 15/8 calling in inner suburban Deakin
GLOSSY BLACK-COCKIES 19/8 a survey of inner suburban Mt Majura revealed 3
groups, of a total of 9 birds, with each group exhibiting apparent courtship
behaviour. [I have not received any information to contradict my belief that
this has not previously been observed in the ACT]
REGENT HONEYEATER 17/8 single bird in flowering Ironbarks in carpark
of Belconnen Labour Club [same place as one appeared last spring]
LATHAM'S SNIPE 17/8 first return; Queanbeyan
PEREGRINE KILLING SWAMPHEN then harassed (unsuccessfully) by Brown Falcon
FAN-TAILED CUCKOO 16/8 first return; several reports on this day
and, as final confirmation that spring is here, on the 14/8, 2 blowflies and
a cabbage moth reported!!!
