larry, thank-you so much. the default inittab was indeed running login scripts on both ports 1 and 2. i commented out the port 2 line as you suggested and my com2 serial handler works fine. have a great holiday season. kristeen From: Larry <> To: Sent: Monday, December 5, 2011 7:58 PM Subject: Re: [ts-7000] another newbie question about serial ports Kristeen One thing that you need to check if you haven't already is check the file /etc/inittab. This file is used, among other things, to generate logins for serial ports. Make sure that if the port you're trying to use is listed that you comment that line out with a # character. If you are trying to do I/O on a com port that has a login running on it, it's hopeless.
