A better way might be to disable the getty for the console.

Kristeen One thing that you need to check if you haven't already is check the file /etc/inittab. This file is used, among other things, to generate logins for serial ports. Make sure that if the port you're trying to use is listed that you comment that line out with a # character. If you are trying to do I/O on a com port that has a login running on it, it's hopeless.
