Yes.... just found out that you can actually plug a cheap molex connecter in upside down far enough to make a connection... the drive was powered... and then it was smoking... and now I am looking for a new drive.

Another solution would be to power the USB drive separately.
Either mod a usb cable to do the necessary, or use a powered 3.5 inch disk
adapter with a 3.5 to 2.5 adapter.
