Sounds like a power issue, I've had hard drives in a desktop when hot
plugging cause lockups, you'd be surprised how much current it takes to
get those platters spinning. I assume the adapter you're using draws
it's power from USB? If so you could try cutting the power lines to the
USB port and supplying it from a 5V power supply. As I remember the USB
5V is actually a boost reg, or a charge pump from the 3.3v running the
board even if you run a regulated 5V supply to the board and isn't
capable of the full 500mA.
