Matthieu, Petr - It turns out my problem with ttyAM1 is simpler than I thought. For some reason UART2 is in seven bit mode (7N1) during the time between the decompressor finishing and when the real console init code happens. My terminal emulator was set to 8N1 which was making things look a lot worse than it actually is. I'm looking for the right place to fix this, but at least I understand what is wrong.
