I agree 100% with everything you wrote :-) LFS is a really great guide for 
knowing the options you need to use to compile stuff. For instance, with some 
libraries you need to pass a --shared option to the configure script to get 
what you're looking for. I was going to mention LFS in my original message and 
then I forgot.

On the LFS site there is a Cross Linux from Scratch. There doesn't appear to be 
an ARM-specific version of it, but the general idea is the same no matter what 
the architecture...it'll give good info on how to cross compile some of the 
packages, although it looks like in their tutorial it actually ends up booting 
into the system to compile the rest of the packages. But it's still a very 
useful reference.
