If udev isn't running the device node won't be populated automatically.
This will happen if you are running in the fastboot environment, or if
udev isn't enabled in fullboot (which it is by default on our load, but
it appears you are using a new install of lenny and I don't know what
its default is).

You should be able to run a command like "mdev -s" to populate the node.
(At least in fastboot, not sure if this utility is in the path from
fullboot).
