Ah, so it doesn't really matter? I was thinking that maybe the format
changed along the progression from 2.4 to 2.6 kernels but was going to
give the cpio / gz format a chance since it seemed like the easier one
to expand in size

I'm using Debian on both the TS and the server and Ubuntu on the laptop
so they're all very similar systems. I'll give mkinitrd and the whole
thing a try this afternoon when I can get to the console
