For me,
the value in zigbee/802.15.4 is that it does the encryption,
routing, etc. For me, a bare radio would be a lot of extra work.
Correct me if I am wrong, but it seems that the Maxstream product has
a radio, serial interface, various on-board I/O, and the zigbee part
baked in, all in about 1x1 inch part. They could be stand alone parts
with no extra processor attached, only configure once through the
serial port setting encryption, node id, data direction, or could be
mounted on a board and interfaced to a processor via the serial port,
allowing you to, for instance, write to registers that would be
readable by other nodes. Thus, you could use the Maxtream product to
export the analog values and discrete values from the TS-7400. Of
course there would also be the ability for other nodes to write to
registers in the Maxstream part, and you could then read them
periodically and send them as outputs.
Well, I am still working on figuring it all out.

board with the radio, antenna, and a mpu. The mpu contains the 802.15.4
protocol and some capability to add some functionality. It also has connectors
to enable it to be plugged into a host board for interfacing.
