802.15.4 atits base level gets you point to point reliable
communications that feel a lot like Ethernet with a tiny taste of TCP
thrown in - Source and destination addreses, broadcasts, automatic
retries, etc.
ZigBee is just more layers on top of that that supply the mesh
functionality and some application profiles (similar in concept to USB
and Bluetooth).
The MaxStream radios when used in 802.15.4 "raw" mode are very easy and
reliable to use. Packets get from here to their very reliably - and
when they don't (because a radio is out of range or powered off) you
know about it immediately.
I went to MaxStreams developer conference last year and they pointed out
a number of problems with the ZigBee spec. that let you choose 1. Not to
work in the real world, or 2. Be interoperable but very fragile. The
Motorola ZigBee presenter said that these problems will be fixed by the
1.1 version of the spec.
Implementing a self healing/self discovering mesh is fraught with peril,
which is why version 1.0 of the spec is flawed... But if you can
configure the mesh by hand or place some reasonable restraints on the
topology the overall process is pretty easy - I'm planning to do it
myself - I have groups of about 20 radios that need to sometimes be
repeaters. In this case the topology is well known and I can
pre-configure routing tables.
Enjoy,
Bill.

OK, please enlighten me... I was under the impression that zigbee and
802.15.4 were the same.
Is zigbee just a protocol?
What functionality do I get with just the radio part?
In particular, I am looking for a mesh and relay type of self-healing
network.
