It's true that the world appears to be moving (or perhaps drifting) to
social media. I feel this is simply because once you're on Facebook
(etc?), it's easy. But for many groups where archives of previous
messages are useful, it can be counter productive. It's relatively
easy to search the archives of this group before asking a question,
and many times one will find it's already been answered. Have you ever
tried search a Facebook group? It can be done, but often the results
don't take you to the best answer. The end result is the same
questions being asked over and over. Not to mention fragmented across
dozens of similar groups that have arisen because the group creators
either didn't bother checking if one already existed, or went out on
their own because they got in a huff about the rules of another group.
This mailing list has worked well for many years. It would be a pity
if it carked it just because new users find it a little difficult to
subscribe. It's worth the effort.
For the doubters, there are still many thousands of mailing lists
active. Technical people seem to like them.
