This has been my experience, too. We transitioned from Protools to Reaper =
in our Sound Art classroom a few years ago. A short demo or two had the st=
udents up and running. Reaper's ability to handle multi-channel files and =
to easily route tracks makes ambisonic and surround mixing pretty straight =
forward.
For editing, Reaper is non-destructive, and easy to use, once you get the =
hang of it. It "renders" a file very quickly. There are many JS plugins w=
ritten for it, and it uses VST's and AU's. There is also a pretty active a=
nd helpful user community especially The Reaper Blog https://reaperblog.ne=
t https://reaperblog.net
I'd recommend it highly!
