ended up making a lightweight SASS on the Vicki Powys design and am please=
d with it....but although it is VERY light its bulky. Yesterday on the beac=
h in Cornwall I took my 2 mini omnis (Primo) and improvised a horizontal ba=
r using 2 seagull feathers (end to end)and with two paper clips fastened th=
em and the mics on to a "spaced array" to my Olympus LS14. On a piece of dr=
iftwood branch about the fatness of my thumb I cut a 4"piece which I fitted=
into my sprung mic clip which I connected to a Gorilla tripod (small)...I =
cut a vertical slot for the feathers and hey presto! I will be downloading =
these recordings tomorrow and if there are any good sounds I'll let you kno=
w.I had big difficulty finding the sweet spot with my squirrel baffle mainl=
y because the calculations available for finding =A0this assumes a mathemat=
ically (geometrically?) parabolic dish which the baffle is not. In the end =
I resorted to moving the mic around and listening. The problem then was tha=
t my hand (holding the mic) altered the acoustic performance of the baffle =
and when I came to listen without my hand it didn't sound nearly so good! I=
t was a good learning curve tho' and it kept me busy for a few hours. I'm n=

I can suggest you the use of a parabolic STEREO microphone system, so you c=
an use the parabola for the first purpose (to separate the bird from the en=
vironment), or hold the microphone outside the parabolic dish for the secon=
d purpose (soundscape).
