Brian, as Dan wrote "there are two styles of nature recording with different purpo= ses". I can suggest you the use of a parabolic STEREO microphone system, so you c= an use the parabola for the first purpose (to separate the bird from the en= vironment), or hold the microphone outside the parabolic dish for the secon= d purpose (soundscape).
