Not even the best, most expensive set of gear is of any use if our
burgeoning recordist doesn't find ways to practice and extend their
capacity to listen. A good book on the subject would be an essential piece
of gear. For starters, I'd recommend R. Murray Schafer's "A Sound
Education":

It seems to be out of print, so they'll have to track it down. Maybe a
local library or some online resource has it. In any case, it shouldn't set
them back more than $30-40. And adding this to the external Primo capsules
still leaves some change in their pocket.
