The isolator is only really useful if the mic is buried in foliage. I try t=
o be careful, but some of the places I've recorded there's an overabundance=
 of greenery. Still, it's small, it's light, and there's no real penalty fo=
r using it so I just leave it attached.

 I wasn't able to make a fair comparison between EM172s wired into a 3.5mm =
jack and the EM172s wired into the XLRs, unfortunately. The 70D I'm using h=
as different preamps on each of those inputs with wildly different gains. M=
y only other recorder, a DR-05, has significantly noisier preamps, so it's =
not really a fair comparison. It'd be nice to test against a Sony M10 or an=
 Olympus LS10.
