"I'd prefer to deal with a company here in the US "
Then this won't probabIy too usefull for you... I'm located in Belgium.
I have a SONY PCM-M10 that I use in many circumstances, when backpacking or
mountaineering. I am quite satisfied with the internal microphones.
Anyway to have a better control of the spatial result of ambient recording
I bought a pair of already paired and assembled EM-172 with LOM in
Slovakia. I think Jonas is on this list ;-)
https://lom.audio/product-category/microphones/
Very clean sound, maybe a little bit 'sharp' (which I like !) I think they
are still improving the product, by selecting high quality cables and so
on... Good construction.
I just added home made 'faux fur' small hoods. I've used them on a static
ORTF setting and mounted on the straps of my backpack.
Hope this helps anyway
