Hi Kevin

Yes, the Senal CL6 does work with PIP and that is available in the menu of
the Olympus LS10, but the cable is only 4 feet long and there is no way, I
am told by Gradus/B&H, to add an extension to boost the signal. While this
is working well with the events in the Carolina Wren=92s nest, I will have =
to
resort to phantom power for owls. That means I will have to buy an adaptor =
=96
Senal PS-48B-35H =96 for $50 to connect to my SD 722 and supply power to th=
e
CL6. This is actually a kit with the CL6 offered by B&H for $160.

Weatherproofing the recorder and the connections is not an issue I don=92t
think, I would be leaving it out in protective cover only overnight. I hav=
e
yet to actually sit down and figure out the best way to protect the
microphone capsule and retain a clear signal, even though it is intended to
be well inside the box. The volunteers building the 12 or 15 boxes we will
put up this autumn showed me a prototype with ventilation holes on one side
under the roof, and a wedge shaped opening on the other side. My early
thinking is to slip the mic into one of the =BC inch holes and seal the ent=
ire
row with duct tape. In addition I thought about spraying one of the foam
windshields with a water repellent. I would be happy to post you on my
progress and ask you to share your thoughts with me as well. If this
appeals, send me an e-mail directly in reply. I can post useful discovery
and summarize my success (and recordings), or failure, on this forum when
all is done.

All this said let me add that after observing and recording observations of
birds on this residential island for 15 years I noticed a decline in
screech-owls going back probably 3 years. In the process of recommending
this project for a local Audubon group I learned that there is research
suggesting that screech-owls might go through a natural population decline
and recovery. In a Texas study that period of decline could be as long as
10 years. So, the owl tracks I am hoping for may be a bust.
