I'm sorry for the late reply, I missed the post.
self-noise from microphones becomes evident when recording with a good
recorder in a very quiet environment, e.g. recording distant birds in a
very quiet place (no wind, no distant traffic noise, ...).
Very quiet microphones are around 5-6 dBA (e.g. Rode NT1A), with these
coupled with, say, a SD722 you don't hear electronic "hiss" even recording
at high gain. In a very quiet place you may have less than 10 dB noise.
Microphones with 12-16 dBA self-noise are still acceptable and may provide
no-hissy recordings in many average situations. 20 dBA or higher self-noise
becomes evident and disturbing. The microphone self-noise may be intrusive
and cover faible sounds from animals around. Then, when you increase the
listening volume the electronic hiss becomes very disturbing.
Everything depends on the level of the sounds you're interested in. To
record a concert or to pick up musical instruments at close distance,
probably the DPA self-noise is acceptable.
