Hey Eric,
I think it is not enough to just look at the self-noise specs - the
sensitivity matters as well. More sensitive the microphone, the less
gain you need =3D> less noise.
As far as I know the clip-ons use two Primo EM-172 capsules in parallel
- so you can check the data sheet for those.
Olympus LS-11 seems to be a popular option for a portable recorder with
plug-in power.
