The limiter on the SD 702 can be set in menus to be on or off.
When input level controls are not linked, as would be the case for this hig=
h/low dual mono recording technique, the limiter thresholds for the two cha=
nnels are not linked either. So each limiter would function only on its own=
channel. There is not a separate menu item for limiter linking, it just fo=
llows the input gain control menu selection.
When recording two channels with unequal volume, headphone monitoring on ma=
ny recorders would be awkward and unbalanced. But the SD 702 has menu choic=
es to monitor just the left or right channel, or a mono sum of the two chan=
nels, so your listening focus will remain in the center of your head.
Bruce, if you are submitting recordings to the Macaulay Library, I would ch=
eck with them on whether they prefer this type of split recording, and foll=
ow their guidance on set-up particulars. I=92ve gotten good advice from the=
m on a number of recording issues over the years.
