Inter-modulation Distortion?

The one time I've had mic clipping (or was it hard limiting?) with my 661
(and a pair of Octava MK-012's, though I use NT5's as well), I knew I was
in trouble because the level meters were obviously brick walled during
recording and well below peak. It was a stage show and I couldn't do
anything about it, (gain control didn't affect the meter --it seemed to be
limited before that stage), but I did manage to get usable tracks, so I
guess something was limiting somewhere.
