Damage is unlikely inside the windscreen. You could "pot" the connections with
a blob of silicone sealant to strengthen and prevent condensation. Interference
is unlikely in the field as long as you've shut down your cell phone. Shielding
isn't very important on a balanced audio line.
Years ago K-Tek gave me a prototype minimal XLR connector designed for this
application. I see something longer on their web site now, but it does have a
side entry for the cable.
