I don't know if you're in the US, but if you are, and if you *really* want
those files back and nothing else works, you might want to think about
using one of those companies that specialises in recovering data from
'dead' hard drives. One such company I would recommend is gillware.com (I'm
not associated with them, but have used them twice). These services are far
from cheap, but Gillware at least won't charge you anything if they're not
able to recover the files you want.
