Thanks for feedback everyone!
I too have a feeling, as John says, the Mixpre-D won=B4t help the selfnoise=
of the system. Running some tests, it seems there is no apparent noise unt=
il I reach twelve-one o=B4clock on the Mixpre
when it shows up at about -112 db in Spoundtracks spectrum. I guess that=B4=
s fairly goood and as low I can expect on this cheap setup. For everything, =
except those dead-quiet recordings, it is more that sufficient.
I=B4ll do some more tests with a different voltage, and see if that helps.=

Thanks again!

he use of a separate preamp will not help with the mic self noise of the EM=
172, as is evidenced by your tests with the Mix-pre. Would using quieter mi=
cs with the Mix-pre into the PCM M10 be practical or would the M10 input no=
ise compromise any benefits?

, wich I guess most of you are familiar with. I=B4ve been recording really =
quiet soundcapes,(no traffic for miles, mainly distant sounds etc.) with th=

some experimenting I figured maybe I could put my Mixpre-D in front of it, =
to squeeze out som more hiss-free dbs.
