I do have a carbon fibre tripod. I justify the purchase because taking it =
into the backcountry in a backpack and weight/size are an important conside=
ration plus it could take a beating, it still does 12 years later. The oth=
er reason that I like this tripod is that one can splay the legs to a wide =
configuration that helps stability in wind or rough ground. Plus it keeps =
me from pulling over the rig when deploying 100' of cable.
Metal tripods were too heavy the lightweight aluminum ones were too bendabl=
e/breakable when stuffed into a pack. Though for a more casual user they m=
ay be just fine.
Most of my recording is done with stereo or quad microphone array mounted i=
n a Rycote. I'm not saying everyone should have a carbon fibre tripod, for=
beginners with lighter weight mics I recommend something inexpensive or th=
e tree method.
