Hi Peter and others,

I think different arrays, along with different goals in artistic perspectiv=
e, will require different methods of supporting the mics.

My tree ears systems simply strap around a tree or what ever or can be plac=
ed on the ground, and they are quite versatile that way.

My baffled NT1A system is heavy and benefits by a large and stable tripod w=
ith a quiet tilt and pan head. The sweet spot in a soundscape from this car=
diod perspective is often as small as a couple degrees in any direction or =
height from any one standing position. Legs that splay to various angles ca=
n be very helpful on varied terrain and steep slopes.

While SASS style arrays may not need a tripod with a head, I find the abili=
ty to pan and is welcome when a balanced L and R image and horizon are desi=
red.

Experimental rigs work fine with cheap second hand tripods - they can alway=
s be upgraded later.

I have not used carbon fiber tripods simply because I have not yet been abl=
e afford the price. However, noise caused by wind vibration and resulting r=
inging resonance in my metal tripods can be significant, and I am thinking =
carbon fiber may help with that.

o adjust the legs on uneven ground, so it's better than the three sticks.

category. If people don't like the idea of sticks, they can pick up small t=
ripods with pan and tilt heads for ten or fifteen quid that are much more t=
han adequate for the purpose. All I would say is, unless you're overloaded =
with cash, don't waste your money.

using a telescope on for example; I have a few I've collected over the year=
s, but for supporting a mic? May I propose to the honourable members the si=
mple expedient of a pocket knife and piece of string? Cut three lengths of =
withy about a foot longer than the required height, this being the point at=
which point you bind them together. Splay the legs apart and rest mic/zep =
in between the crutch formed on top; job done. If you leave 2-3 feet of str=
ing running from the seizing, you can loop this over the mic/zep to hold in=
place if required. You don't need the excellent Ashley Book of Knots (one =
of the best things that ever came out of America) to do this job, it's simp=
licity itself.
