I agree with you on several accounts...
First I have the LS-11 and would completely happy with this if it could rec=
ord down to 20hz. I recently picked up a sony pcm m10 and tested the LS-11 =
side by side. Overall I thought the LS-11 produced more realistic sounds th=
en the m10 (I kind of think Sony hardwired some EQ settings internally to m=
ake it sound like the preamp on those things are so quite, because I notice=
s some of the highs were not being picked up as easily as it was with the L=
S=3D11. That said, I did pick up some natural lower ambient sounds that I w=
ould of liked to include in my recordings, but didn't got those sounds beca=
use of the limitation of the LS-11 only able to go to 60hz.
I also agree with companies taking cheaper steps backwards than going forwa=
rd hurts their products. I love LS-11 design and quality. The Ls-14, felt l=
ike a toy almost. All plastic. It felt like Olympus threw in some whistles =
and bells, like the tuner and such and then skimped on quality to save a fe=
w bucks in the cost of production of the product.

y, portability, and usability that it's a constant amazement to me.

m far from surprised. With each new iteration, companies learn to compromis=
e and use cheaper parts and wider tolerances. Certainly Olympus demonstrate=
s this. For example, the PEN E-P1 was an excellent little camera with a nov=
el lens mount and cute look. Then they issued a constant stream of new mode=
ls (ten?) with only incremental improvements, until the OMD line several ye=
ars later -- finally a real difference. I now expect to see another ten mod=
els that exist only due to the marketing department.
