Olympus LS-14 initial thoughts

I added an aliases to my account, so I will be posting as ambient_jungle =
instead of this1crappyemail.

Well I got my LS-14 today...
My initial thoughts of the device - coming from an LS-11 is as follows:

* The LS-14 is all plastic. It's solid, but feels like a toy in my hand. De=
finitely a step backwards from the LS-11. The one possible upside to this i=
s that you may get less handling noise than you would with the LS-11 while =
making recordings with the device in your hand from internal mics - though =
I wont know for sure till tomorrow when I began testing the device.

* The device has a glossy front.. I hate this.. just means it something tha=
t can get scratched easier and will pick up finger-prints.

* The device's lcd screen doesn't seem as easy to read as with the LS-11. T=
he system fonts are "skinnier", making them less readable to me IMO.

*The Volume and mic gain are now push buttons and will make unwanted sounds=
 while you are recording.

* The device is bigger in the hand than the LS-11
-------

That said... I did pull of one simple recording before I had to leave for w=
ork. Listening to the recording.. The stereo separation was good, better th=
an the Sony PSM M10 and as good as the LS-11.

The 3rd mic captures low frequencies. I am able to pic up sounds that I cou=
ldn't with the LS-11. The recordings sound rounded and complete.

The preamp's sound very quite so far...

--------

My thoughts...
The device feels somewhat cheaply made. This is disappointing for anyone co=
ming from the LS-10 or LS-11. The menu system feels "clunky" compared to th=
e LS-11. I hate how the mics protrude as far out as they do with nothing to=
protect them - much further than the LS-11.

Of course I will over look all of this if the recorder truly builds upon an=
d goes beyond the capabilities of the LS-11.

I'll do more testing and will give an update over the several days.
