Max,
That is a safe assumption I think. The spec says that the "angle" can
be switched between 90 deg and 120 deg which suggests that it is
internally matrixed (decoded).
These angles are not the pickup angle which extends most of the way
around, but indicates the "sweet spots" of full left and full right.
Beyond those angles you still have sound pickup. It is probably worth
experimenting with a cheap M-S mic before buying a good one.
You can experiment with decoding and recording using Audacity. Record
a track speaking at centre, left 90 and Right 90 at the 90 deg
setting. Copy the track and split both copies to mono. Select the
lowest track only and invert it.
Now you can make the combinations of L + R and L - R which you can pan
to new Left and Right tracks. With the recordings at 0 deg and L 90
and R 90 you can recreate the original M and S.
L + R =3D M and L - R =3D S
M + S =3D L and M - S =3D R
You may need to adjust the levels of the pair of tracks to get a
"zero" S from the front, a minimum M from the back and a clean
cardioid M from all round the mic.
