This has been discussed on earlier threads. My two cents is it is a questio=
n of intent. I think one person's fudging is another person's craft. Good v=
ideo editors and sound engineers can be measured in some respects by  how s=
eamless their final product sounds and looks. If the person is good, it's v=
ery hard to tell.
There is an entire branch of forensics that does what you describe: look ca=
refully at the waveforms to try to detect change but it's cat and mouse. Wh=
en I edit videotape of natural subjects, there's usually so much unwanted n=
oise and differing levels that I end up creating an ambient loop and using =
that as background. In the context I use it, it's actually to make the vide=
o easier to watch without distraction. That said, I always explain somewher=
e what I've done.
