Could it be something to do with sampling rates and bit depth? It might be =
resampling your files and not doing a good job. I vaguely remember reading =
they convert to 16 bit/44.1kHz, but I'm not sure.

Can anyone help me with this problem, or have you experienced
something similar?

I have just tried to upload some sounds of buzzing grasshoppers, to
Soundcloud. First I tried an mp3 version that sounded just fine
through headphones via my computer. But it sounded warbly and
distorted on Soundcloud. So then a tried a FLAC version, the
improvement was minimal and the stereo image seemed compromised.

So then I tried uploading the same stereo mp3 version to my own
website, loading it in Quicktime format, and it sounded absolutely
fine with a good stereo image.

So what is Soundcloud doing to my audio in the uploading process?

(I did notice some loss of quality in another of my recent Soundcloud
uploads).
