Nobody has mentioned flux in this soldering debate. An excess of flux
is the secret to clean and fast soldering and speed is the only way to
avoid overheating components. There is not enough flux in multicore
solder wire. With flux, you can make a joint in a fraction of a
second. If you can count to four, you're too slow. :-)
The simplest flux is violinist's rosin which they use to make the bow
sticky. You can also get soldering flux paste in dispensers. That's
not solder paste, just "electrical" flux.
I've got a fancy controlled soldering station in my workshop, but when
I was travellng, I carried a butane soldering iron and could repair
even miniature radio mic plugs in the field using flux with it.
