Howdy Peter!

I learned soldering using wood burning tool as a kid. For decades, I operat=
ed a stereo store and repaired high quality electronics. =A0Never had a com=
mercial temperature controlled iron at the store; I found the tip quality a=
nd iron to be important factors; however, I beg the question. Some high qua=
lity tips are available that are interchangeable with the tips of=A0inexpen=
sive popular-priced irons.
=A0
The simplest way to control the tip temperature is to buy a cheap light dim=
mer ($2-8) and wire it to control the voltage to the iron. It works quite w=
ell, although it=A0requires manual control. When great heat is unneeded, tu=
rn the temp to low. When you need more heat turn up the control. After a wh=
ile you know where the setting should be. I never had a calibrated knob, bu=
t you could use a paper dial with a dot on the knob.=A0

=A0P.S.: If the iron gets extremely hot, another approach is to insert a di=
ode in the power cord to cut the power in half. It works finewith some iron=
s.

Done and working, thanks. I will get a temperature controlled iron though, =
in case I need to do more of these. The cheapest aren't too expensive.
I'll note here that Frogloggers also contacted me to allay my fears, which =
is good service.
Initial tests of the array without the nose baffle seem ok, but I haven't h=
ad time to compare them to anything yet.
