There are a lot of factors. I hope someone with practical experience answer=
s, but until then I will take a stab.
According to Core Sound's website the specs on that pre-amp indicate an EI=
N of -124dBm across the full bandwidth for the microphone input. (But why a=
re they referencing against a mW?) If we follow Rob Danielson's recommendat=
ion, then the quietest mic to use with this amp would have an EIN of -116dB=
.
The AT4022 are rated at 13 dB(A) self-noise and 19.9 mV/Pa sensitivity. Usi=
ng Rane Note 148, this works out to -113 dBu(A). But if they are like the A=
T 3032 they replaced, then they might do 5dB better in the field. Even in t=
hat case the amp would be well-matched, considering that it's rating is not=
weighted.
Looking at the other side of the equation, the amp is considerably better t=
han the built-in pre-amps of the DR-100 (original or Mk II). What I can't s=
ay is if there's a better amp choice or if the line input on the recorder h=
as any deficiencies.
