Yes, you will have widely more options for your array design by using exter=
nal microphones.

I notice the Shure MX391LP/0 is still available for cheap on eBay:

That one requires an adapter cable.


I don't know how much space is allowable between the boundary material and =
the microphone capsule - I would expect the highest frequencies would be fi=
rst effected by any gap.
